Rock Lyrics That Sing Praises to God
Jan 30, 2007 Classic Rock
Musicians often have hell to pay for playing rock and roll. They shoulder the blame for being in cahoots with the devil, and for glorifying him with secret messages supposedly hidden in their lyrics. If a berserk kid goes on a shooting spree, rock lyrics must have possessed his soul. If a killer mentions he likes a certain band, their lyrics must have cast a murderous spell over him. If your lottery numbers don’t hit, heck, why not blame the lyrics of a rock band?
Well, guess what? There actually are rock bands who write lyrics about God. Yes, that God. They’ve glorified God—not the other dude—in their songs. Here are a few musicians who’ve written music and lyrics about how God has rocked their world:
George Harrison – “My Sweet Lord”
With poignant sincerity, Harrison sang the lyrics, “I really want to know you/Really want to go with you/Really want to show you, Lord/That it won’t take long, my Lord.” Deeply spiritual, Harrison subtly wove “hallelujahs” and Hare Krishna chants throughout the pious lyrics. He also underscored his worship of a divine entity with the repetition of the lyrics, “my sweet Lord” throughout the entire song. Harrison is now with the God he so dearly loved, and that makes the lyrics all the more meaningful.
Stryper – “Honestly”
Blessed with pretty-boy good looks, an abundance of talent, a knack for theatrics, and the ability to write music and lyrics that didn’t preach, these glam-rockers strongly connected with audiences worldwide, and brought Christian metal into the mainstream. The gorgeous power ballad, “Honestly,” with its sweeping, majestic melody, and passionately delivered lyrics, became their best-known song. Its lyrics, “Call on me and I’ll be there for you/I’m a friend who always will be true/And I love you, can’t you see/That I love you honestly/I will never betray your trust in me” is a message of comfort and reassurance from God to one of His followers.
Norman Greenbaum – “Spirit in the Sky”
Gospel call-and-response bursts make this sunny, classic rock song shine even brighter. Greenbaum wrote the lyrics, which convey joyous anticipation of the afterlife, in a mere 15 minutes. Greenbaum, who is also Jewish and makes numerous references to Jesus in the lyrics, claims he had no religious intentions when he wrote the song—he just wanted to reach a bigger market. Disillusioning as that may be, the song’s uplifting melody and lyrics make the hereafter a little less intimidating.
Train – “Calling All Angels”
Patrick Monahan of this Grammy Award-winning alt-rock band plaintively sings the lyrics of this emotionally moving song. He beseeches heaven, God and the angels above to give him a sign of their love amidst the world’s turmoil. Hungering for an anchor of faith, and professing he’ll be loyal to it once it appears, he sings the powerful lyrics, “I need a sign to let me know you’re here…/And I’m calling all angels/I won’t give up if you won’t give up.”
KISS – “God Gave Rock ’N’ Roll to You”
KISS? The fire-breathing, blood-spewing band who once dodged accusations that their name stood for Knights In Satan’s Service? Yep. A reworking of an Argent song from a uniquely KISS perspective, the lyrics include, “God gave rock and roll to you/Gave rock and roll to you/Put it in the soul of everyone.” According to Gene Simmons, the song lyrics were rewritten, “as kind of a guitar anthem song, that being in a band and playing guitar was a privilege and a God-given gift.” And we thank God they were given that gift!
Many rock lyrics aren’t an off-ramp directly to hell. The bands that pen lyrics about God may come as a surprise, but they’re definitely going in a different direction, on a higher road.
Smart Lyrics has the latest lyrics about songs of praise. They have various rock and roll music lyrics that give thanks to God.
Jethro Tull – British TV Top 10 Progressive Rock Bands (#4)
Jan 29, 2007 Rock Bands
From the documentary Top 10 Progressive Rock Bands – it is pretty funny and contains rare footage of the band from the early years towards the beginning (right after the… ahem… codpiece part
) “Ah, Anderson! Come in! Come in! So, you wish to play two flutes at once, dance around on one leg dressed as a tramp, and thereby become one of the world’s leading salmon farmers?… Stupid boy! What you need is a codpiece!”
Has rock & pop music lost it”s identity?
Jan 28, 2007 Classic Rock
Many years ago, if you heard a song on the radio, in a shop or bar, you would immediately know the name of the artist or band. Back in the 80’s this was certainly true, especially the pop charts. Since the 90’s though this individuality seemed to trail off with musical styles from different genres being homogenized into rap, R&B and dance for instance. This could be due to the huge US gangsta rap influence — even the spice girls seemed to have borrowed from this. Fashion obviously has a big influence. Could this be why the 80’s is making such a big comeback?
Rock music, on the other hand has seen something of a Renaissance in recent years, often going back to its various innovations like punk, 60″s beat and classic rock. Bands like The Artic Monkeys, The Feeling and Franz Ferdinand are certainly good examples of this. The Killers and Coldplay on the other hand owe a lot to 8o”s bands like The Cure or U2 but made a style all of their own. The interesting thing with rock as opposed to pop is that the rock bands seem to stay together much longer. U2 are an obvious example. The Rolling Stones seem to roll on for ever and even Status Quo are still on the go and numerous others which you don”t hear much of these days. The biggest bands in pop on the other hand i.e. The Beatles, ABBA and The Spice Girls only lasted a few years — often being offered multi-million deals to reform with only the spice girls capitulating. Even so pop seems to have more comeback bands now such as Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and Micheal Jackson. Though Micheal.Jackson had never really left the public eye, he hadn”t toured for over ten years. With his recent death of course, everybody wants a piece of the nostalgia that has blossomed as a result of it. It”s doubtful whether his unique blend of musical style and individuality will ever be matched.
Heavy metal seems to continue its popularity unabated ever since Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin first unleashed their huge yet mesmerizing guitar sound onto the world. The different fads of fashion certainly did not have as much influence on this genre as it did on the other popular styles. Punk did not have as much effect on metal except it may have helped it become more popular and power driven with new bands like Motorhead, Iron Maiden and Van Halen joining the foray. psychedelic and bluesy rock on the other hand largely lost out to the punk movement with just a few of them surviving punk”s stampede for a few more years such as Wishbone Ash, Electric Light Orchestra and Supertramp. Pink Floyd are one notable exception with the album “The Wall” released in 1979, which ensured that they kept up with their punk and new wave rivals.
An answer to one of the original question may be that bands & artists who are self formed such as in rock and metal write their own songs or perform other people”s songs with such passion that they never tire of it, where as in pop the artists are often manufactured and usually tire of someone else controlling everything they do. There are exceptions even here though like Take That and The Pet Shop Boys who have always wrote their own songs. This may be what makes songs more memorable, artists who write their own material and have a certain fashion or style, This is certainly true in pop and rock but less so in metal where electric guitar playing skill or speed are usually more important.
