Preceded by a variety of protopunk music of the 1960s and early 1970s, punk rock developed between 1974 and 1977 in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, where groups such as the Ramones, Sex Pistols, and The Clash were recognized as the vanguard of a new musical movement. Punk rock bands, eschewing the perceived excesses of mainstream 1970s rock, created fast, hard music, typically with short songs, stripped-down instrumentation and often political or nihilistic lyrics. The associated punk subculture expresses youthful rebellion and is characterized by distinctive clothing styles, a variety of anti-authoritarian ideologies, and a DIY (do it yourself) attitude. Punk rock became a major phenomenon in the United Kingdom during the late 1970s; its popularity elsewhere was more limited. During the 1980s, forms of punk rock emerged in small scenes around the world, often rejecting commercial success and association with mainstream culture. By the turn of the century, punk rock’s legacy had led to the development of the alternative rock movement, and new punk rock bands popularized the genre decades after its first heyday.

@keltyk
Charles Shaar Murray said: “The New York punks were bohemians, the London ones yobs”. Sham 69 did attract skinheads & the National Front were trying to recruit people & turned up at gigs, etc. That’s why they started doing the Rock Against Racism gigs in 78-79, with The Clash, Elvis Costello, Tom Robinson Band, etc.. as The Clash’ Paul Simonon said: “It was to say: we’re over here, on the other side (to the fascists)”. Of course, Johnny Rotten said repeatedly that J Pursey is a wanker

Sham 69- I vaguely remember their fans had a reputation for trouble and there may have been a long feud against Clash fans. Pursey seems to have vainly tried to keep things decent. Did a lot of fans go onto become Nazi punks, then skins? Am I getting my facts mixed up? Anybody remember anything like that?

Fuck this shit. I love Pursey and Sioux, but you do not call The Damned middle class sell outs. Especially with Captain scrubbing shit out of toilets before being in the band. Why shouldn’t they want a lot of money, they’ve been working class their whole life. Who the fuck made this documentary?
