Jethro Tull – British TV Top 10 Progressive Rock Bands (#4)

From the documentary Top 10 Progressive Rock Bands – it is pretty funny and contains rare footage of the band from the early years towards the beginning (right after the… ahem… codpiece part ;) ) “Ah, Anderson! Come in! Come in! So, you wish to play two flutes at once, dance around on one leg dressed as a tramp, and thereby become one of the world’s leading salmon farmers?… Stupid boy! What you need is a codpiece!”

You’re welcome! My love for his lyrics has made Ian Anderson the best English teacher I could’ve had as it’s not my native language!

  2. wardka Says:

@helenmyeyes Ahh – now it makes sense. Anderson has often sent me scurrying to the dictionary, urban or otherwise. Thanks!

Britons have been using this figure of speech for decades. A “Mickey”, is a “Mick”: a pejorative, racist term for an Irishman (so nicknamed because so many Irish surnames begin with Mc- or Mac-) It is a common stereotype, in both the UK and USA, that Irish men have volatile tempers, like to brawl, and make good boxers. So, To “take the Mickey (out of someone)” means to take the vigour, the gravity, the self-importance out of them, by mocking them, usually in a very subtle way. (Urban Dictionary)

    My dad loves Jethro Tull.

He told me back when he was my age in 1972, many a Jethro Tull and Pink Floyd vinyl were swapped hands in the hallways.

  7. zosodude13 Says:

We are on the same ship. No worries, its only an slightly different opinion anyway.

  8. manoalorts Says:

    True.

And please respect my opinion and the rest’s, after all we are on the same “ship” (we are prog rock fans).

  9. camelandu2 Says:

Yeah, COMPLETELY agree… Until I was about twelve years old, I actually thought Squigely Fair and Rhayader were Jethro Tull songs… A bit embarassing, but that was before I really got into this music.
Still, I think Pete Bardens and Andy Ward were as technical as almost any Tull member. (MAYBE not John Evan(s) or Barriemore Barlow though).

  10. colouredmirrorball Says:

Agreed. If you still don’t believe this, just listen to Squigely Fair from the album A Nod and a Wink (and I’m not alone, The Stig also likes this song which makes the guessing to his idendity more easy as the possibilities are now limited to all three Camel fans!).
I see Jethro Tull as a heavier version of Camel and Jethro is better at technical parts but Latimer is better at writing moving, emotional songs (and no one can play the guitar the way he does).

  11. camelandu2 Says:

    Same here…

  12. camelandu2 Says:

WHY not? Have can you say that albums such as “Rajaz”, “Moonmadness”, “The Snow Goose” and “Dust and Dreams” aren’t good? (Okay, you didn’t SAY that, but they are AMAZING!) I’ll be the first to admit that Camel and Tull are different, but IMHO Camel is better, mainly because they have been more consistantly good, though they have had some periods that weren’t quite as good as the best ones.

i’m from panama….i didnt know about their music was played as a psycologic tactic against noriega(noriega) . its funny…. min5:20

  15. manoalorts Says:

From Camel I only really like the album Harbour of Tears. I dont see them as great as most people do.

  16. zosodude13 Says:

King Crimson should be top 3 on that list. Camel is OK, but Van Der Graaf Generator is a better prog band and should have the #10 spot.

  17. einarabelc5 Says:

Me sad. Most people are so dumb.

  18. holydiver73 Says:

They’re very old bands because Progressive Rock was predominantly a 70’s thing. Admittedly there are a few bands around that still carry the banner for prog, but this top 10 was based on length of time these bands have spent in the British album charts. If the UK weren’t so fickle when it came to music then maybe It would be a bit more diversified but as Prog was only fashionable in the UK in the 70’s, and it’s now against the law to be unfashionable in the UK, then that’s why they’re there.

  19. einarabelc5 Says:

That’s fine except for one thing. Those are very old bands. Moody Blues. Wow you have some taste there. Wierd.

  20. amaro9009 Says:

hey whats the song they play while talking about the codpiece??? : )

  21. Ayrshirenutter Says:

the song at 1.20 is ‘the driving song’ not back to the family as stated

  22. colouredmirrorball Says:

Agreed with Camel but maybe not with the other parts.

  23. sheepeasy Says:

    1. Camel
    2. King Crimson

Hawkwind, Rush and (worst of all) Yes were shite.
