Being an influence in culture is an important role….
but you cannot even begin to compare the musicianship of the guys in Devo with the Steely Dan troup. So are we talking about music, or influence.
Plus…SD has had an enourmous influence on music.
MAybe not as visible as Devos, but you ask 100 musicians what they think of Fagen and Becker, and most of them would reply a top notch response.

Dude…Devo was a strong influence in the 70s, and maybe their influence continues today….but
Steely Dan’s music was not the norm for the day back then. It was FAR superiour to most pop rock music being made at the time.,,,,Jazzier then Yes and Tull, but just as heavy in a different way.
And if you are calling them obsolete, do you also consider Duke Ellington, Beatles, and Mile DAvis obsolete?
Besides that…R&R Hall of Fame…who gives a shit?

@mojo4404 It’s Palmer, but I am unaware of him being dead. You might be thinking of Jim Hodder, the drummer (who also sang lead on “Midnight Cruiser”). Hodder drowned in 1990.

Gotta loce Skunk Baxter – great guitar player, great percussionist and now a freakin defense dept. consultant! How’s that for funny – a dope smokin, long hair, hippie defense analyst!

Interesting…thanks for clarifying….

I heard Donald had major stage fright when he sang in the early years…
April 29th, 2007 at 5:52 pm
That Denny Diaz could play boy! Strange that David Palmer is singing this when Donald Fagan sang this on the original studio cut.

Is that David Palmer singing lead? I’m new to the Steely Dan fan club and learned he was one the lead singer on “Dirty Work” – also read that Palmer is dead.

Guess you are not a Steely Dan fan, and believe they are obsolete today (do you mean not relevant? I can see it not being influential and liked by scores of punk/alternative/hipster music lovers everywhere who forbid their music to be too musical or “professional”) But I bring your attention to one Joe Jackson .. who came out in the late ’70s new wave area along with Devo – Joe Jackson covered “King of the World” on a live album, so I guess at the least, he is a fan and influenced by SD.

No one is Dan; Steely Dan is a freaking sex toy in a novel, and Fagan and Becker borrowed the name from “Steely Dan III from Yokohama,” a strap-on dildo referred to in the William Burroughs novel The Naked Lunch.
April 29th, 2007 at 7:54 pm
None of them. Thats just the band name.
April 29th, 2007 at 8:49 pm
Which one is Dan? The guy at the organ, or the singer?
April 29th, 2007 at 9:49 pm
atl east palmer can carry a tune fagan uses synthisizer and drowned out by backup singers and still sounds horrible I can make a barking dog sound good in the studio
April 29th, 2007 at 10:15 pm
Lead guitarist is kick ass.
April 29th, 2007 at 10:18 pm
The bongo drummer is full of win style wise too.
April 29th, 2007 at 11:17 pm
David Palmer is a poor substitute for Donald Fagen. Sad bros.
April 29th, 2007 at 11:27 pm
That was for the DEVO remark.
April 30th, 2007 at 12:25 am
WHAT!?
Shut the fuck up!
April 30th, 2007 at 12:39 am
DEVO was an innovative band, no doubt, but their musicianship & the scope of their influence was very limited. Gerald Casale of DEVO has acknowledged that the group was a concept-based creation–not a cadre of musical talent. SD brought jazz composition and serious musicianship into the rock genre; consequently, their music transcends the era in which it was created. SD has influenced more bands across a wider musical spectrum–remaining relevant when DEVO is tied to 80’s “new wave” derivations.

Dude…comparing Steely Dan to Devo is comparing Babe Ruth to a ballboy…
April 30th, 2007 at 1:58 am
Most bands can’t hang with Steely Dan’s playing. And they don’t have the T-shirt. Devo is cool, Steely Dan is awesome. I think they become more relevant as time goes by.
April 30th, 2007 at 2:52 am
Than name me one band that gave credit to Steely Dan and said they influence/inspired them?
I’ll wait till you think real hard, while I can name at least 100 bands right now that says DEVO influenced/inspired them
