Indie Rock Music News
Mar 14, 2010 Classic Rock
Maria Taylor has already released a number of music hits with the introduction of her first album. She is the epitome of indie-chic, and she can sing. And play guitar, drums and piano. Oh, and she is dating Conor Oberst.
Taylor released her solo music album, “Lynn Teeter Flower,” recently, the same time that her beau released his “Four Winds EP”, which includes five songs plus a cut from his upcoming eighth album “Cassadaga.” The songstress has been recording music half her life and has been an integral member of Azure Ray, Now It’s Overheard and Little Red Rocket; the first two music bands still exist but are currently on hiatus. Two other Taylor sisters and two guests serve as the music band for this new music album produced by Spoon drummer Jim Eno. Many blogs about indie rock music artists get confused that when it comes to Saddle Creek artists so many get confused about their anecdotes. Some authors touted that Taylor sings backup on songs for The Faint and Bright Eyes. Just so everyone is clear, the appropriate way to use this nuanced information is to say that she sang on a friend’s music album. Saddle Creek and the larger indie rock music world is chock full of incestuous band member swapping and guest appearances.
Taylor’s music album was recorded over a period of four weeks in Athens, Ga. with a band member of Now It’s Overheard partner in crime, Andy LeMaster as well as in Omaha with Saddle Creek engineer extraordinaire Mike Mogis. The music album goes between harmony driven pop-rock songs and melancholic acoustic musings. The aptly named opening track “A Good Start” features Taylor’s ethereal vocals advising a friend to quit running from the world. Very emo music, people think, but in fact it is considered indie rock music.
The upbeat melody of “A Good Start” juxtaposes starkly with the next music track, the acoustic and introspective lo-fi cut “Clean Start.” The down-tempo songs continue for a few tracks, but come to a screeching halt with the dance-worthy beats of “Irish Goodbye.”
Taylor creates a Rilo Kiley-ish work but stays true to her distinct, otherworldly vocals. There are even traces of rap music from a man named RIG, which oddly enough doesn’t disrupt the power of the song, but helps break up the track. Two tracks stand out as profound music compositions. The simple guitars and mellow drums of “No Stars” are augmented and joined by piano and bass as each successive verse builds on the previous. The ambling track “The Ballad of Sean Foley” was co-written by Oberst. The lyrics are all Oberst, but the music is all Taylor; her voice even serves to fill in the holes of his warble. This effect can be felt when listening to Bright Eyes’ new single “Four Winds.” Oberst’s voice is at its classical best with Taylor holding him up.

Top Five Indie Albums You Must Own Classic & New
Mar 12, 2010 Classic Rock
Do you want to be an indie music fan, but don’t know where to start? Below are some of your core indie albums that every fan should have in his or her collection. Some are classic, others are a little more recent on the music front. Leave a comment if you don’t agree.
The Soft Bulletin’ by The Flaming Lips
Why:
It was the first album to fully harness the band’s commercial spirit
It set the groundwork for their amazing live shows
Songs like ‘Waiting For Superman’, ‘Race For the Prize’ and ‘The Spark that Bled’
They may be better known for their spectacular live shows featuring Wayne Coyne running across the crowd in a giant bubble, fancy dress costumes, glove puppets and much more but this album contains everything that is great about The Flaming Lips.
The introduction to opening track ‘Race for the Prize’ immediately informs you that something special is about to happen, the small count in and then crashing gong immediately gives way to a track that is almost too positive to imagine. Wayne Coyne may sound like Kermit the Frog on acid but as a lyricist and front man he is second to none.
Daydream Nation’ by Sonic Youth
Why:
Possibly the bands most accessible album
The vocal interplay of Kim and Thurston
It retains all the guitar fuzz that Sonic Youth are known and loved for
Tracks like ‘Teenage Riot, ‘Candle’ and ‘Silver Rocket.’
There has been an increase in the ‘Don’t Look Back’ series of gigs where a band plays a classic album from their history. In some cases you have been left wondering why an album was held in such regard that it required to be dragged out again years later but this can’t be said about ‘Daydream Nation.’
Opening track ‘Teenage Riot’ sets the tone with its high tempo and squalor and the noise and confusion doesn’t really give up over the rest of the album. It is not often that all the magazines will have the same opinion on indie rock but there appears to be universal acclaim for ‘Daydream Nation’ and it has captured the true genius of Sonic Youth. At times their albums have been patchy and perhaps too experimental for some ears but on this 1988 release they got it exactly right.
The Queen is Dead’ by The Smiths
Why:
The album features Morrissey at his most humorous
Johnny Marr starting to show his true talent on guitar
Brings together many different styles in one cohesive record
Tracks like ‘I Know its Over, ‘Cemetery Gates’ and ‘There Is A Light That Never Goes out’
For some, The Smiths will be the perfect template of an indie band such was the mix of intelligent lyrics and working class backgrounds. It is fair to say that the majority of the focus falls upon Morrissey but Johnny Marr showcased a sense of jangle guitar that went a long way to influencing the entire Britpop era.
‘The Queen is Dead’ album has a largely humorous streak running through it and it stands as a strong argument to people who say that indie music is all po-faced and afraid to have fun. Morrissey may set himself up as being pretentious at times but tracks like ‘Frankly Mr Shankly’ and ‘Vicar in a tutu’ indicated he could enjoy a laugh with the best of them.
‘Rings Around The World’ by Super Furry Animals
Why:
It was their largest and most ambitious album to date
It brought to light so many of their influences
It has Paul McCartney and John Cale appearing on it
Tracks like ‘Receptacle for the Respectable’ and ‘Juxtapozed Wit U’
Welsh indie wizards the Super Furry Animals have always been regarded as an innovative and adventurous band but this 2001 release showcased the band at their most “out there”. With not much emphasis on their techno past, this album crosses the gap between indie rock and classic 60s Beach Boys effortlessly. They have never quite managed to equal this masterpiece but they have created a great number of albums since.
Funeral’ by Arcade Fire
Why:
The vast array of instruments on show
Really powerful song, emotionally and musically
Fantastic percussion and rhythm sections
Tracks like ‘Wake Up’, ‘Power Out’ and ‘Rebellion (Lies)’
They pulled off one of the hardest tricks in music, namely writing an album about death and change yet making it sound like the most uplifting album of the year. There were a few stand out singles released from this record but collectively it worked tremendously and still stands up to repeated plays today.
Follow up album ‘Neon Bible’ took the band to a higher level and you can see them rivaling U2 and REM in a few years if they continue this upwards trajectory but ‘Funeral’ remains a must hear album for anyone drawn to grandiose statements and classic songs.

Indie Rock band “The Velmas”
Mar 10, 2010 Classic Rock
Since 1999, the Velmas – bassist Todd “Figaro” Minnick, guitarist Mike “Harvey” Grosshandler and drummer Michael “Bruce” Bruce – have been entertaining upstate New York. The band has become a favorite around Albany and Syracuse, NY, and is gaining popularity throughout the Northeastern U.S.
In 2002, the Velmas released their debut album, Another Day At School. Since its release, the album has received rave reviews and has opened doors of opportunity for the band.
“ADAS” was followed by Recess (2004), a 10-song “double EP” featuring new and unreleased studio tracks, as well as several live tracks. Recess included the song “Restless, Restless,” which was selected out of thousands of entries as one of the top 20 finalists on Howard Stern’s much-publicized “Restless, Restless” contest. The song also wound up being included on a compilation album called “The Best of Restless, Restless” with other entries including those from William Shatner and Robert Goulet.
The Velmas would follow that up with their second full-length album, Station, released on City Canyons Records on October 31, 2006. Station was recorded at Robby Takac’s (Goo Goo Dolls) Chameleon West Studios in Buffalo, NY. A new digital single, “Playground,” was released by City Canyons in April of 2009. November of that year saw the release of another single, “Wait”.
The Velmas are three singers and songwriters creating powerful rock music. Their sound is influenced by old-school to modern rock, punk, reggae, and even country and classical. In concert, the Velmas back their music with a playful, high-energy live show, which is the reason why Albany-area “Velmites” keep voting them the Capital Region’s “Best Alternative Band” and “Best Rock Band” (Metroland, 2006, 2007, 2009).
The Velmas have shared the stage with numerous acts, including Soul Asylum, Collective Soul, Everclear, moe., Tally Hall, Winger, Vertical Horizon, Samantha Ronson, and Shaw Blades (members of Styx, Night Ranger, and Damn Yankees).
This indie rock band has all the right stuff to satisfy your craving for music you like but have not heard yet.

Based out of Boston, MA, this foursome keeps it real and down to earth, using music as an uncontrived conduit for self-expression. “Every musician wants to feel like they’re unique and doing something that’s never been done before,” say the members of a’tris. “But let’s face it: you need to use an agreed-upon vocabulary to describe your music to others. As a musician, you have to come to terms with this as a necessity to discuss your music.” Heavily influenced by the jazz, classical, and progressive rock genres, a’tris not only gives us music as a language, but also as a soundtrack to our lives. “Music and film are inherently intertwined,” says Taylor. “I frequently look to film for inspiration and hope that my music has a bit of cinematic flair.”

UK Indie Rock Band: Getting Frank with The Franks
Apr 20, 2007 Rock Bands
Conveying real sentiments and emotions in a new and revitalizing way, The Franks is one of the great and top UK indie bands. Their towering vocals pooled with sharp and powerful riffs leave a feeling of lightheadedness and uplifted spirit. Indeed, this is what the band is all about – true emotions behind human life!
Unlike some bands that play all-too-often, cheery songs, the theme of the band is more on their forward pessimism. Take it from the lyrics of their vocalist Jamie Frankel. Almost everything is about disappointment and pain, which if taken into consideration is very relative to what life is really about – that the world is not a perfect place; life is not always in euphoria, and life can not be euphoric without dysphoria. The beauty, however, in their music lies in the fact that despite negative things, the sufferer is not the only one who is feeling bad. There are those who even have it worse, like Frankel himself. Feel the band’s melodic acoustic, stirring instrumentals and meditate on their bleak emotional rock lyrics.
In their first album Suzy Can’t Spell, the band pays homage to a secretary of a record label executive who is poor in grammar. The album radiates about her boss who made but broke lots of promises to the band which made them feel being on the brink of almost reaching their dreams but can’t just get there.
Such character and theme of the band may seem quite odd but it is what makes The Franks unique. In fact, many in the music industry eye the band as one of the top UK acts to watch.
Moreover, the band is also known for its free, diverse, and addictive style that jumps without effort from genre to genre. This can be seen in their best tracks ‘Annie Who’ and ‘Loose Reckoning’.
If you can relate with anything sentimental and emotional, then The Franks indie rock band is for you.
