Valdy – Rock And Roll Song

Issued in Canada October 1972 on Haida 101. From the LP “Country Man” on Haida HL-5101. Produced by Claire Lawrence (of Chilliwack). Valdy (Valdemar Horsdal) is a Canadian music legend. He is first and foremost a folk singer, and has built a solid, worldwide following over the years with his intimate, gentle songs. One of his experiences, being booed at an early concert where he was mis-booked with loud rock bands, led to this record, which is pretty much his only “rock and roll song.” A&M Records took him to Los Angeles to make his first album, on which the great Jim Gordon plays drums. He recut this song at one point, and for quite awhile, that was the only version that got any airplay. This is the original version that you remember. Valdy has won two Juno awards and seven further nominations, and amassed sales of a half-million records to date. He is still performing. Elsewhere on Youtube, there is an absolutely charming clip of him performing this song solo in an instructional video. Go look it up!

Rock ‘n Roll is a character from the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero toy line, comic books and cartoon series of the 1980s. He is the G.I. Joe team’s original machine gunner and debuted in 1982. His real name is Craig S. McConnel, and his rank is that of sergeant E-5 (later promoted to E-6). A surfer, weight lifter and bass guitar player from Malibu, the noise of machine gun fire is music to his ears.
Rock ‘n Roll’s primary military specialty is infantry, and his secondary military specialty is PT instructor. He is familiar with all NATO and Warsaw Pact light and heavy machine guns. He graduated from advanced infantry training (top of class), and received specialized education in covert ops school.
Rock ‘n Roll is cunning but naive, and forceful but shy. He possesses a strong sense of loyalty to his teammates and is sincerely concerned about their wellbeing. Rock ‘n Roll is a man of honor and integrity who can be counted on to hold the line.
In time, Rock ‘n Roll moved on from being a machine gunner to a gatling gunner.
Toy history
Rock ‘n Roll is part of the first group of characters in the 1982 G.I. Joe relaunch. His character is re-issued with a new action figure design in 1989 with a slight name change to Rock & Roll, however, his file card’s content continued to maintain the code name Rock ‘n Roll. The name change is temporary as the next few editions of his action figure all used the Rock ‘n Roll name. The character also became part of Super Sonic Fighters and Star Brigade sub-lines.
Fiction
Animated series appearance
Rock ‘n Roll first appeared in the animated A Real American Hero mini-series.
Marvel Comics
In the Marvel comics G.I. Joe series, he first appeared in issue #1, along with the rest of the original team. He participates in the rescue of nuclear physicist and noted peace activist Adele Burkhart from a minor Cobra facility. Adele is rescued safely, only suffering from a gunshot wound to the arm.
Rock ‘n Roll is featured in the Joes’ second recorded adventure. He, Snake-Eyes, and Scarlett are far behind enemy lines and low on ammunition. Needing to get valuable info back to friendly territory, Scarlett orders both of them, at gunpoint, to run to the rendezvous, leaving her to fight a rearguard action. As they jog through the desert, Rock ‘n Roll begs Snake-Eyes to be allowed to go back to help Scarlett, but finds he is talking to empty air as Snake-Eyes already has left.
Rock ‘n Roll finishes his mission, then steals a Joe motorcycle. He arrives just in time to kill another wave of enemy soldiers and rescue his friends. Reinforcements endanger all three, until General Hawk, bending orders himself, arrives in the VAMP in time to save them.
A flashback reveals that around this time, Rock ‘n Roll is part of the mission where, due to a helicopter crash, Snake-Eyes loses his ability to speak.
The Joe team manages to capture Cobra Commander for a time, and Rock ‘n Roll is assigned to be one of his guards; however, the Cobra ninja Storm Shadow rescues the Commander. Some time after, Rock ‘n Roll and the other original thirteen Joes save for Snake-Eyes and Hawk, are taken off field duty. While on leave and headed for Malibu, Cobra mercenaries called Dreadnoks run Rock ‘n Roll’s classic 1956 Bel Air Nomad off the road. He and his two friends, Clutch and Breaker are injured. Spotting the Dreadnoks while in an ambulance, Rock ‘n Roll commandeers the vehicle and chases them down, resulting in the capture of the Dreadnok, Buzzer.
He would later be featured in a multiple-issue storyline where he and Clutch find the Cobra-owned town of Broca Beach. Rock ‘n Roll realizes the Broca Beach police are Cobra agents by a ring they sport. They are recognized as Joes and captured by the Dreadnoks. They are brainwashed by the Baroness, using an old device left behind by the evil scientist Doctor Mindbender. The two later escape.
They team up with Canadian police officers to destroy a Cobra distribution facility in Canada. Broca Beach is read from documentation, causing odd headaches with the pair.
In a later attack on a Joe facility, the Baroness manages to activate the duo’s hypnotic suggestions, which was to kill and destroy. Rock and Roll and the Movies on Satellite TV

Ever since video killed the radio star, and probably before, there has been a public obsession with seeing the lives of our favorite rock stars caught on camera.  They’re all over television gossip programs, “tween” magazines, in our supermarket aisles, and now, in our movies.  However, once in a while a movie comes along that really allows the audience to peer into the hearts and souls of their idols, and see a little deeper into the meaning behind the music.  Whether these movies are sought out, or happened across while flipping through the channels on satellite tv, they are instant classics that warm our hearts.  That being said, the following are some of the top rock and roll movies of all time.

1. Walk the Line (2005).  Get an insiders view into the life of legendary Johnny Cash with this film that follows him from boyhood to fame.  This film tells the story of a life riddled by addiction and misfortune, love, lust, and of course, musical genius.  With a great palette of colors, and stars Jaoquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, it’s a great film to see in HD.

2. The Doors Movie (1991).  Starting in Los Angeles in the 60’s this rock and roll epic follows the story of poet and singer Jim Morrison through music and fame, from his days as a UCLA film student through his struggles with self-destruction.  Featuring music, mayhem, and Val Kilmer as Morrison, this film is a journey through the world of California rock that existed for a brief moment in time in Los Angeles.

3. Ray (2004).  A visual masterpiece in high definition, the film Ray makes a statement right from the start.  From the very beginning of his life straight on through to the end this movie chronicles the trials and tribulations of rocking pianist, vocalist, and legend Ray Charles.  After losing his eyesight he struggles through to make a career during the 1950s and 1960s, all the while facing racism, drug abuse, and toxic relationships. Ray stays true to his ideas about combining soul and gospel music to become the musical legend we all know and love.

4. Tommy (1975).  This masterpiece by The Who not only hit the silver screen in a big way, but was a smash Broadway hit.  The whimsical tale of a blind, deaf, and mute pinball wizard, the original movie features the complete band including drummer Keith Moon, before his death.

5. Jailhouse Rock (1957).  Once the hottest thing north of the equator, Elvis lights up the screen as Vince Everett, a young man serving time for manslaughter. He is introduced into the record business by his cellmate, but has some trouble hacking it once he gets out of prison.  After forming his own label and becoming a big hit, he struggles with the burden of fame, and we wonder if he’ll stay true to his roots or get lost in the glamour.  Oldies like this can be found on classic movie channels, like those available with satellite tv.

6. A Hard Day’s Night (1964).  A goofy tribute to an average day in the life of the famous foursome the Beatles, the film A Hard Day’s Night, combines comedy and music for a truly entertaining cinematic experience.  Each of the Beatles has an individual storyline going at some point or another, but not to worry; it all comes together with a rocking concert at the end.  If anyone were to make a movie about evading adoring fans a smash hit, it would be the Beatles.

Start rocking out today by getting all the right channels from Direct TV. With affordable DirectTV Deals anyone can bring the magic of rock and roll right into their own living room.

Tickets Springsteen for a Rock N Roll Spectacular!

Anyone who has been lucky enough to get their hands on tickets Springsteen will probably tell you it was the most unforgettable concert they have ever been to. If there is any drawback to a Springsteen concert, that would probably be after seeing the Boss perform live it’s hard to find another concert that can even come close to the experience he brings to the stage.

American Legend

Few musicians manage to survive through the decades. This is mainly because music trends often shift tremendously in a matter years. Right when it looks like hard rock is ruling the roost, suddenly disco becomes the darling of the music charts. When everyone seems to be listening to heavy metal, rap music comes and completely changes the face of the charts. Bruce Springsteen is one musician whose music has endured all these trends and has emerged as being a cut above the rest.

Part of the reason why tickets Springsteen are so popular is because Springsteen is a musician who is not afraid to experiment with different sounds and styles. Over a career that started in 1965, Springsteen has incorporated pop and rock and roll as well as folk and blues into his music. Springsteen is also known for his lyrics- a prolific songwriter, Springsteen speaks from the heart of blue collar America, speaking of the hardships of working men and women across the nation. Springsteen is also not afraid to speak his mind about his political feelings, as is seen in songs like Born in The USA, which speaks about the plight of Vietnam vets.

Tours That Went Down In History

Tickets Springsteen have been in demand even before the Boss signed his first record deal. This is because he had already made a name for himself at a grassroots level by playing at a number of local venues. Springsteen’s mainstream success is also marked by a number of tours that have gone down in music history. In 1975, Springsteen played a set of 10 concerts over five nights at the Bottom Line club in New York. This was broadcast live through radio and was one of the definitive factors that established the fact that Springsteen was indeed ‘for real’. This would later be listed by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the ‘50 Moments that Changed Rock and Roll’.

Fans who bought tickets Springsteen for the Born in the USA and the Born to Run tours were also treated to shows that have since been regarded as classics. Springsteen also springs up at a number of New Jersey shore clubs from time to time, doing sets in celebration of what has now been called the Jersey Shore Sound. In 1999, Springsteen played fifteen sold out shows in New Jersey and he has also played forty five sold out shows in Philadelphia, both of which have been commemorated with special banners. With a history of making influential music and playing unforgettable concerts, it’s little wonder that getting passes for a Springsteen show isn’t always easy. You can always get your tickets Springsteen online via an authorized ticket vendor.

The Electric Guitar: From Big Band To Rock And Roll

Compared to its acoustic cousin, the electric guitar has a very short history. In modern times, electric guitars are most often associated with genres such as rock and roll, blues rock, and jazz. However, this instrument has its origins in the big band music of the 1930s and 1940s. As the jazz orchestras of those days grew and their brass sections increased proportionally, the need for an amplified guitar became more and more pronounced. Adolph Rickenbacher, George Beauchamp, and Paul Barth, all of who eventually founded the Electro String Company, are usually credited with the production of the first electric guitars around 1931. Whoever did it first, the eventual result was a guitar that used pickups to convert the vibrations of its steel strings into an electrical current, which was made louder with an instrument amplifier and speaker.

As mentioned, an electric guitar’s strings are always steel. This is, however, one of the few features shared by all the various types. Electric guitars come in a variety of models, including solid body, hollow body, wood, metal, one- six-, seven-, eight-, nine-, and twelve-string, and even double neck models.

The first of these, the solid body type, is the most common. They are generally made of some kind of lacquered wood, which can be anything from maple, to koa, to ebony. The average solid body electric guitar has six strings, and the vibrations of this type of guitar are produced by the strings alone. This is notable in comparison to the hollow body electric guitar. Although the two types work similarly, the body of the hollow body guitar vibrates along with the strings, which means that the pickups convert both string and body vibrations into an electrical signal. A semi-hollow body guitar is a combination of the solid and the hollow types, and it is generally held to strike a balance between the attributes of the two. Then there are the metal body electric guitars. The bodies of these models are chambered (due to weight considerations), but they are designed to be played as though made of solid wood. Finally, the electric guitar can sport anywhere from one to twelve strings, which makes for, as one might imagine, a plethora of sounds and potential musical applications.

While there are any number of electric guitar manufacturers in the world, some are certainly more famous than others. Fender and Gibson, for example, established their reputations in the 1950s as makers of high-quality mass-produced guitars, and they remain some of the most well-known products available. Other reputable companies include BC Rich, ESP, and Peavey.

The electric guitar has gained a certain notoriety over the years, thanks to its association with a number of high-profile artists, among them Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, and the irrepressible Keith Richards. Interestingly, there has been a movement over the past few decades towards the use of the electrical guitar in contemporary classical music. However, such compositions are by no means common, and the genres of rock and jazz remain the primary territory of the electric guitar.
