Michigan Rock Band Mahoney Win Make A Star Best Music Video 6 Contest
Mar 21, 2010 Classic Rock
Make A Star’s 6th Best Music Video contest and its $100 cash prize went to Southeastern Michigan duo Mahoney and their video for the hard-charging power pop choon âTurn Off The Lights and Turn On The Stereoâ.
Directed by former Open Mic talent contest comedian Marty Stano, the hilarious video sees the dynamic duo performing a high-energy aerobics routine in some very 1980s outfits.
The band brought out a strong crowd of fans, many from their home state, and that support combined with high judge scores all around helped Mahoney open out a big lead on their challenger, South African rock band 12th Avenue, and their video for âOver The Edgeâ.
Click to watch Mahoney and 12th Avenue music videos
Mahoney’s music is a solid rock and roll recipe, with the hard edged, angular simplicity of The White Stripes and an ample sense of fun and humor. Add a brilliantly directed music video by a proven comedian to the mix, and it all adds up to two guys from Southeast Michigan becoming the 6th winner of Make A Star’s $100 Best Music Video contests. Who will be winner number 7?
The action has already begun, as Best Music Video 7 is currently in the semi-final round, and Mahoney are at it again, with their live in the studio video ‘Ms. Jones’ competing against Los Angeles pop starlet Tenaj and her nightclub dance hit ‘What’s Your Status’.
The other semi-final sees former Make A Star Fuse winners Sea Monster bring their classic New York garage punk anthem ‘That’s All’ back for another round of bull fighting madness, this time competing against Phoenix, Arizona band Element 115 and their ode to the automobile called ‘Hot Cars’.

Lady Gaga Sunglasses – How to Dress Like a Rock Star
Mar 20, 2010 Classic Rock
More than any other celebrity today, Lady Gaga sure knows how to make a statement. She is a veritable fashion chameleon. You simply never know what this singer will show up in next. Whether it is a bubble wrap dress or an outfit made of feathers, the world is always waiting on pins and needles to see what sort of creation Lady will be wearing each time she steps out in public. One of the ways that the singer shows her unique sense of style is through her innovative accessorizing. In particular, Lady Gaga sunglasses become pieces of art when paired with her creatively put together outfits. Seeing the potential for her chosen pairs of eyewear, many people are now interested in buying styles from her favorite brands in order to get the same look that so many go gaga over!
Although Lady Gaga sunglasses are seen in a variety of styles as varied as her clothing, makeup, and hairstyle choices, they almost always have some element of glitz and glam. One of the most well-known brands that supply this look to the rock star is Versace. Often noted for being both opulent and chic, Versace sunglasses embody everything that Lady Gaga stands for when it comes to her trend-setting style. Although the particular styles of her Versace eyewear change from day to day, the rimless shaded versions have become iconic.
Another one of the many brands that Lady Gaga sunglasses often include is Gucci sunglasses. A popular style from this brand usually spotted on Gaga is a rimless style that allows you to see the singer’s eyes while still covering a good portion of her face. Another favorite of Gaga’s is Marc Jacobs. Offering eyewear in some of the boldest colors and shapes makes this one of her favorite brands. Her choice of eyewear is always fashion-forward and, along with the rest of her wardrobe, hard to miss.
Rarely seen without a pair of eyewear, Gaga has also been spotted in a number of styles from the fashion power-house Bvlgari. Of course, the eyewear she chooses from this popular company always comes in a unique shape to complement her quirky style. However, what is probably her most notable pair to date are the white-rimmed Carrera sunglasses she wore for her “Bad Romance” video. This highly-recognized pair is a classic aviator style, but with a twist. Summing up the style of Lady Gaga sunglasses is virtually impossible, as her looks are always as unique as the rock star herself.

Highway Star: Guitar Cover, Deep Purple, Full Song
Mar 16, 2010 Classic Rock
“Highway Star” by Deep Purple. My take on the classic guitar song. I learned it a few years ago so as far as tabs go, I’m not using any. Also during the solo, I do some of the harmonized parts that I have yet to see anybody else do, so I hope you enjoy that. Deep Purple is a great great band, they’ve got so much more than this and “Smoke on the Water.” Also Machine Head is an unreal album. Anyway, hope you like this. I put up other videos fairly frequently, so subscribe if you’d like.

Too Much Isn’t Enough — Lyrics About Rock Star Excesses
Mar 14, 2010 Classic Rock
When musicians meet with Success, it often introduces them to its good friend, Excess. But Excess is a bad influence that hangs out with shady characters like Alcoholism, Drunk Driving, Drugs, Overdose and Insanity. Many successful musicians have written music and lyrics about their misadventures with Excess and its gang. Or they’ve written music and lyrics about people they’ve known who’ve gotten a little too chummy with Excess and its buddies, and wound up regretting it, or getting in so deep, Excess and Co. wouldn’t let them out. Here are some of those songs about overindulgence.
“Kickstart My Heart” – Motley Crue
This high-grade tune’s lyrics, written by recovered heroin addict, Nikki Sixx, are about how he not only knocked on heaven’s door, but briefly flung it wide open. In 1987, Sixx OD’d on heroin, and was declared legally dead, until a paramedic literally gave his heart a kickstart with two shots of adrenaline. Sixx even said that he was watching from above as the paramedic fought to bring him back to life. The song’s lyrics celebrate the incident that led to his sobriety, and the new, drug-free ways he enjoys living on the edge: “When I get high/I get high on speed/Top fuel funny car’s/A drug for me/My heart, my heart/Kickstart my heart.”
“Ziggy Stardust” – Davie Bowie
The lyrics to this Bowie classic are about a rock star who believes — and is destroyed by — his own hype. Ziggy was, according to the lyrics, someone who “took it all too far/But, boy, could he play guitar.” Becoming larger-than-life, he transforms into a self-absorbed, out-of-touch-with-reality superstar who treats his bandmates as little more than sidemen, and who feels vastly superior to his fans. The lyrics tell the tale of how the kids catch on to Ziggy’s arrogance, and end up killing the monster they’d helped create: “Making love with his ego/Ziggy sucked up into his mind/Like a leper messiah/When the kids had killed the man/I had to break up the band.”
“Rock Soldiers” – Ace Frehley
Original lead guitarist for KISS, and a recovered alcoholic, Ace Frehley wrote this song and its lyrics about a 1983 car crash that reminded him he wasn’t an indestructible rock god, but a regular, old-fashioned mortal. The lyrics are about a drunken Frehley behind the wheel of his DeLorean, leading police on a high-speed chase the wrong way on the Bronx River Parkway. The chase ended with a wreck that nearly killed Frehley. Some of the lyrics about the infamous incident include, “With a trooper in the mirror/And Satan on my right/We went the wrong way down a one way road/Hitting everything in sight/I cried “I am invincible!”/Said I was high above the law/But my only high was just a lie/And now I’m glad I saw.”
“Rockstar” – Nickelback
Canadian hard rockers Nickelback take playful jabs at the rockstar lifestyle in these lyrics, and aren’t above satirizing themselves, as well, in the song. They poke fun at their own rock stardom in the lyrics, “I want a new tour bus full of old guitars/My own star on Hollywood Boulevard,” referring to the collection of vintage guitars owned by Chad Kroeger, and the star they have on Canada’s Walk of Fame. They also mock general rock star excesses throughout the song, including the lyrics, “We all just wanna be big rock stars/And live in hilltop boxes driving fifteen cars/The girls come easy and the drugs come cheap/We’ll all stay skinny ’cause we just won’t eat.”
These lyrics show what happens when rockers lose sight of the music and focus on the seemingly limitless celebrity lifestyle. But they also show that when rockers look at that lifestyle in hindsight, it can inspire them to write some of their best songs!

Run’s House: ‘run’s House’ Star Teams Up With Kid Rock
Mar 9, 2010 Classic Rock
Joseph Simmons, more popularly known by his self-declared show business moniker of Reverend Run, is a longtime veteran and pillar of the rap music industry. Nowadays, one of his latest musical collaborations will be with Robert James Richie, better known as the musician Kid Rock. Simmons and Richie will be working together on an album titled Running With The Kid, a play on the title of the earlier album Riding With The King by B.B. King and Eric Clapton. During an interview with the website G4tv.com earlier this year, Simmons explained that the similarity of their styles led to the decision to try working together and see what would come of it.
Also according to Simmons, Kid Rock is a major fan of Run-D.M.C., the seminal rap group that Simmons formed during the 80s together with Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels and the late Jason Mizell. On the other hand, the self-styled reverend added that he has grown to understand and appreciate Kid Rock’s music in return. They planned to begin production of their joint venture in Detroit. The new season of the reverend’s own reality television series, Run’s House, will likewise feature a new album he’s been working on. It’s yet to be confirmed whether the new album will be Running With The Kid, or a different Simmons project entirely.
For his part, Richie stated that he’s been focusing on lyrics, melody, and songwriting. He considers writing rap to be easy, and finds more challenge in crafting musical melodies and songs that will stand the test of time. Like the classic performers, Kid Rock wants to release something which can still be appreciated even three to four decades from now. This is why there will be less emphasis on rap in the album, Richie says, though it will still be a rhythmic element thanks to the cooperation of Simmons.

Jimi Hendrix is the #1 Rock and Roll Star of All Time
Feb 21, 2007 Classic Rock
I’ve been in rock and roll all my life and I admit it’s bit difficult to put Jimi Hendrix above Mick Jagger in terms of brilliant rock and roll stardom, but after watching several movies of both Jimi and Mick in concert, here’s why I would do it:
1. BEST MUSICIAN
Jimi Hendrix was the only true genius in rock and roll. The word genius is highly overused and it’s often applied to people who are extremely talented. I disagree with the dictionary when it equates genius with “exceptional intelligence”, and what I think the word genius is supposed to refer to is a person who creates something that’s new, and not only new, but significantly new, important, and somewhat of a milestone in human development. I call Albert Einstein the premier genius of the human race because the Theory of Relativity was a giant jump in the understanding of the way our universe operates and to this day, few people actually understand anything other than the bomb part. Jimi Hendrix was the genius of rock and roll because he was the only one who invented something new. It’s almost impossible to do anything that’s really new in the field of music because there are only eight notes in the Western scale so in a sense, all music is derivative. But Jimi invented guitar feedback and nobody before Jimi even thought about it. And Jimi took his invention one step farther. Until Jimi came along, all music since the time of Mozart and Beethoven has been built on chord structure and rock and roll music uses simple chord structure. Jimi actually used feedback alone to construct song structure in a few, but not all of his songs (i.e. Third Stone From the Sun). To this day, nobody has been able to do what Jimi did. In fact, Jeff Beck bought Jimi’s strat at an auction and even the super talented Jeff admitted that he can’t get the same sounds out of the very same guitar as Jimi got. With all due respect to Mick, he’s a brilliant singer and one of the all time great rock and roll songwriters, but he’s not actually a brilliant musician because he only plays rhythm guitar. I believe Mick would agree with me about Jimi being a genius guitar player because Mick was one of the first ones to discover Jimi when The Experience made their debut in the clubs of London. Along with John Lennon, Mick spread the word to the other British musicians about the new nova in the rock and roll sky.
2.BEST PERFORMER
It’s a tie between Jimi and Mick. Call it a dead heat with one survivor. If Elvis was still breathing he’d be breathing down both of their necks and I probably will get flack from a whole lot of people for saying that, and even more flack from the know-nothing fans of Madonna, Prince (whoever he is these days) and Michael Jackson (not to mention Roberta FLACK). Certainly Elvis came first and Elvis was The King, but Jimi and Mick both had their own unique styles and neither one were heavily influenced by Elvis in terms of their performances. Mick was influenced by James Brown’s dancing and only God knows who influenced Jimi’s performance style because he was truly an original. Besides, Elvis moved on to acting and he starred in tons of below average movies – and now I’ll really get flack! Unfortunately I won’t get Roberta. But seriously, Mick deserves an award for putting on a great show every single time he appears, he did that right from his debut as a young man, and he’s continued to do that as an old man. Jimi died as a young man. Both of them were sex stars on stage as well as off stage but watching Jimi on stage is nothing short of breathtaking. He had all the moves, he had the body of a black Adonis, he played his guitar with his teeth, behind his back, under his leg, and when he set fire to it at the end of his shows, he got down on his knees and prayed to the Guitar God who obviously listened to him. He wasn’t a dancer like Mick, he was a mover and a shaker of women’s “G” spots. People standing in front of his stage all had the same astounded expression on their faces as if to say, “I can’t believe this guy! What galaxy did he come from?”
3.SONGWRITING TALENT
“And the Wind Cried Mary”. Oh, Jimi, how poetic can you possibly be? So the galactic storm screamed “Jimi”, and what hetero man in his right mind doesn’t want that “Foxy Lady”? I suppose that a man who’s in a “Purple Haze” might not be able to recognize one, and a man who’s in a state of “Manic Depression” might not be able to get out of bed and do anything about it, but every time Jimi launches into Foxy Lady with his famous dissonant E chord my libido stands up and salutes. And every time I hear that all time classic feedback note in the middle of the song, it never fails to send shivers up my spine. Comparisons to other songwriters are superfluous. Jimi quite obviously wrote more than a few great rock and roll songs, he almost always had something important to say, and he always said it in a poetic way.
4.SINGING TALENT
As a professional rock and roll singer, it’s hats off time to Mick. Oh, I’ll get big arguments about that but people who would argue the point don’t understand rock and roll singing. It’s not about range, power, or technical perfection. It’s all about emotion and style. Mick knows how to sing without necessarily using words. Like Robert Plant, he often uses sounds alone to express emotions. A case in point is “Going Home” on the Aftermath album which consists of 11 minutes of Mick having sex with a microphone. Jimi Hendrix was actually embarrassed by his own singing because as a great musician, he recognized and understood the great singers. In the recording studio, he was the master of guitar but he recorded his vocals over and over and over again until he got something that he could just live with. But I put Jimi in the same class as Bob Marley and Bob Dylan. These are great artists who were all perfectly capable of putting across their own unique songs in a way that nobody else can. I’m not a fan of Dylan’s voice and when The Byrds recorded Dylan songs, they did a good job but they lack Dylan’s sarcasm and his almost bored feeling with his own poetic brilliance. I’m a big fan of Bob Marley and I like his voice, but I recognize that he’s not a great singer. It just so happens that I love Jimi’s voice. I hear Bob Dylan’s influence and I know that Jimi was a fan of Bob’s voice and of his lyrics. But Jimi did something very unusual vocally and in the theater, it’s called an “aside”. Jimi had a wonderful habit of flipping off little spoken phrases, very often interrupting himself while he was singing and it came off as being totally COOL. When it comes to singers, people either like them or they don’t and all I can say is that as a professional singer, Jimi’s voice works for me big time.
5.SEXUAL AURA
Every rock star has it. Jimi had too much of it for one man. I’m wildly hetero but I’m wowed by the sexual aura that surrounds Jimi on film. I was lucky enough to see him one time in person and I can testify that he was as HOT as it’s possible for a human being to be in the flesh. There are an uncountable number of women who would be quite willing to testify about Jimi’s abilities in the bedroom.
So in conclusion, it’s not necessary to be a great musician to be a rock star, just like it’s not necessary to be a great actor to be a movie star. This should be self evident and there are way too many examples in both fields to start listing them. But Jimi was a genius guitar player, a unique and atomicly powerful performer, a great songwriter, a very good singer, a super nova sex star, and a world class personality on top of everything else. That’s why I call Jimi Hendrix the Number One Rock Star of All Time.

Opening Acts!…does Playing Before a Rock Star Make you One?
Feb 7, 2007 Classic Rock
Itâs the dream of many a musician to open up for either: their favorite band or the favorite band of their childhood. For many, the ultimate in true rock star status is to share a stage with the musicians who made you want to play music in the first placeâ¦to see you name in lights (or printed on a flyer, as the case may be) with the guys (or gals) whose music you listen to almost as much as (if not more than) your own.
But is it really a good idea, as an unsigned artist, to open up for an act already known to the general public? Will you get anywhere near the recognition opening up for Pearl Jam in a large venue that you would at a local club playing with other unsigned bands? Will you fans dig your music as hard as ever or will they forget all about you in a mad frenzy to have Eddie Vedder sign their backs?
Itâs a double-edged sword that many artists forget to think over carefully before rushing starry-eyed into the excitement of being the opening act for: (Insert Name Of Famous Rock Star Here). In many cases, venues and promoters still expect your crowd to turn out and drink it up at shows, even though the headliner will draw a big crowd of their own. Many of these shows are an hour plus away from your local area and tickets can be upwards of $100. Is that something you can expect your friends will be up for?
And then thereâs the issue of press. Do you dare ask a reviewer to come out and cover your show and expect that a large portion of your article wonât be about how âPearl Jam rocks!â You score local radio play only to have the DJ announce the show and play, âAlive.â Sometimes opening up for a signed act can make an unsigned artist feel even more invisible than usual.
The following are a few tips that may help you to weigh the pros and cons of grabbing a spot as the opening act for a famous band:
1.) Would You Take The Show If You Werenât Playing With Pearl Jam?—Many artists think that playing with a famous act is so important that they donât even bother to check out anything else about the gig. Many assume that rock stars always command rock star stages, but this is often not the case. Many acts, especially classic rock/retro acts on revival tours, are looking to get out and play anywhere that will put them up the right kind of front money. Often times this means that the venues are in more remote areas either looking to get on the musical map or using a well-known act to entice people to drive in from far away. Sometimes, the clubs are older rooms looking to get their groove back or new places that havenât yet acquired a regular crowd. Before booking anything, drive out and check out the venue on a few different nights and make sure that you like the room, the stage, the regulars, the area, etc. and ask yourselves if this is a venue that would play if it wasnât for the draw of the signed headliner. Since many of these shows can cost unsigned acts anywhere from $200-$2000 in ticket guarantees, you want to make sure that your getting your moneyâs worth musically.
2.) Would Pearl Jamâs Fans Listen To You If They Caught You In Your Local Bar?—For a lot of upcoming acts, the lure of playing in front of a crowd of adoring fans is a huge plus. But, you need to make sure to remember that just because people are coming to a club doesnât mean they plan to listen to you. Sadly, often the followers of signed acts could care less about unknown openers and will arrive right before the headliners set. Sometimes, they sit in at the bar in another room praising their favorite band while the openers play to their friends and the wall. Worst case, many of them will rush the stage yelling, âPearl Jam! We want Pearl Jamâ while you do your best to win them over musically. This is why itâs important to only open for signed acts that fit in the style of your music. If you loved Pearl Jam in high school but your band sounds like John Mayer, you might want to think twice before deciding that their fans are automatically going to dig your tunes.
3.) Find Out All Of The Details Before Committing To A Signed Act Show—Itâs fairly easy to book a local show: two to five unsigned acts, 20-45 minute sets, all ages to 21 and up, $0 to $10 cover, sound check or line check, maybe free parking, possibly some free drinks, sometimes backline gear, occasionally free food, and pray for a decent sound man. Itâs all pretty much cut and dried and if your band has been around awhile, you can confirm gigs in your sleep. Signed headlining acts are a whole different animal and promising your crowd to a venue two hours away, with a $40 cover charge where your band is playing a 15 minute set with your gear scrunched up on the front of the stage so that the headlinerâs gear can remain set up might not be as easy as you think. Your fans are used to seeing you rock the house, down the street from their homes, where you play long, get an encore and the house buys everyone a shot! Unless theyâre dying to see Pearl Jam, they might not be up for all of extra energy it takes to see you open up for a famous act.
4.) You May Not Be Signed But You Can Act Like You Are—If you decide to take a gig opening up for a signed band and you want to impress them, their crew, their reps, and the clubâs management, then make sure youâre act as professional as your headliner. Get there early, have your gear organized, make sure everything is working perfectly, load in at the speed of light, have your set list ready, be courteous to the sound guy (gal), keep your set on time, and load off at the speed of light. Most importantly, have your merchandise in order and professionally displayed at the club/arena: CDs, DVDs, t-shirts, bumper stickers, hats, condoms, thongsâ¦you name it. You know youâre unsigned but the headlinersâ fans donât, so why advertise it? Put on a fantastic show and maybe youâll sell some CDs, etc. and make some extra cash.
Thereâs one more thing to consider here: fulfilling a dream. If itâs your dream to open up for an act you love, then throw caution to the wind and do it just for the dream. If you lose money, hate the club, get booed by over-zealous fansâ¦who cares? For that one set, you shared the stage with the band that put the dream in your heart to get up on a stage in the first place. Plus, itâs great bragging rights for your band. You can throw it up on your website and talk about it to your grandchildren. If you donât mind the extra effort, commitment and sometimes hassle, then go for it! Who knows? Maybe theyâll pick you up as the opener on their tour? Maybe their label will see you and sign you? Maybe Rolling Stone will come out to review them and mention your name? If youâre doing it to fulfill the dream, then everything else is a bonus. Just remember to get all of the details, and stay smart when undertaking a huge gig. Now, get up on that stage and wow that big crowd, you rock stars!
