Five Classic Concert Tickets

Don’t you just love that movie ‘High Fidelity’ where the hero is constantly making lists of his top 5 all time favorite records, girl friends, meals and whatever. I save all the concert tickets from the concerts that I have been to and I can’t help but make up my top five classic concerts and wish I had the concert tickets to go with the memories.

Classic concert ticket number 5: U2 plays on an L.A. liquor store rooftop, March 27, 1987. They were atop a liquor store rooftop, Los Angeles. It may not have had The Beatles’ originality, but Bono and the guys surely enjoyed their 20 minutes on top of the LA world nevertheless. The Irish super group was about four songs into the gig on an L.A. liquor store rooftop when the city police decided to end their impromptu performance and spoil the fun for the fans that had gathered below. Strictly speaking this wasn’t a concert with proper concert tickets but I love the video “Where The Streets Have No Name”, which was the point of the whole exercise.

Classic concert ticket number 4: George Harrison’s Concert for Bangladesh, August 1, 1971 at Madison Square Garden, New York City. What had initially been conceived as a small political fundraiser aimed at bringing humanitarian relief to the refugees in breakaway Bangladesh quickly turned into one of the biggest rock fundraisers of the 1970s. Although Lennon and McCartney never ended up signing on to Ravi Shankar’s cause, many other stars did, including George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Billy Preston, and Eric Clapton, who actually collapsed onstage as a result of his protracted bout of heroin addiction but still managed to proceed with the concert. The 40,000 or so fans who crowded New York’s Madison Square Garden witnessed some rare performances, including a 25-minute Indian recital by Ravi Shankar, Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall” and Ringo Starr’s “It Don’t Come Easy.”

Classic concert ticket number 3: Pink Floyd break visual barriers with The Wall shows between February 1980 and June 1981. It was a World tour. Pink Floyd’s visual theatrics took a turn for the legendary with their infamous The Wall concerts, which were the last shows Roger Waters, Richard Wright, Dave Gilmour, and Nick Mason performed together before the Live 8 show in July 2005. Each show required timed performances and unprecedented cooperation between the musicians, concert crew, lighting engineers, and computer programmers. In fact, extended instrumentals and Roger Waters’ impromptu introductions often served to cover up stage fires and other technical difficulties, which seemed inevitable when putting together a show that included a 30-foot-high teacher puppet, a scorpion wife and other such animated characters.

Classic concert ticket number 2: Jimi Hendrix wows Woodstock, August 18, 1969 at Woodstock, New York. After plowing through three days worth of rain, mud, minbending drugs, and music, the 30,000 or so diehard fans who chose to brave one more night for Jimi Hendrix’s Woodstock closer were not disappointed. In fact, those who stuck around to witness Hendrix’s mind-blowing rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” cannot deny its importance on the festival’s soundtrack; it became the eternal anthem of a generation of civil rights crusaders, anti-war protestors and music lovers everywhere. Now I know this was a ‘free’ concert but it didn’t start out that way and there were actual concert tickets issued for Woddstock.

Classic concert ticket number 1: The Beatles sell out Shea Stadium August 15, 1965 in New York City. After a thundering welcome at JFK airport, the American release of Help! And an electrifying appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Beatles’ success at Shea Stadium, the first-ever stadium concert of its kind, was all but guaranteed. In fact, the sell-out crowd of 55,600 was so deafening that the The ‘Fab Four’ could barely hear themselves play throughout their 30-minute set. Instead, The Beatles’ grand armored van entrance, John Lennon’s ‘Jerry Lee Lewis’ onstage freak-out and the event’s record-setting gross revenues stole the show.

Early Beginnings

The original members of the band all spent their early lives performing in any of several post-punk bands that were prevalent on the local music scene at the time. Given that many of these bands performed together and in the same venues, they got to know each other, and two of the members, Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon, dated for a time before the band was formed, and they would eventually marry and have a child.

Moore and Gordon also discovered that they had common musical tastes, and they began to perform together. They eventually recruited the other members and “officially” formed Sonic Youth in 1981. Their first gig was at a 10-day “Noise Festival” in the New York neighborhood of SoHo, and their performance was a resounding success. It wasn’t long before Sonic Youth tickets were difficult to find, as they built a loyal local following that would soon get them noticed by the music industry.

Unique Sound

The band is credited with a new sound that became the foundation for “alternative” rock and roll, and the biggest variable that contributed to this sound was the band’s alternate guitar tunings. A little-known fact is that these guitars were tuned in a non-traditional way because they were extremely cheap, as the band could not afford top-notch equipment.

These tunings led to additional innovations, as their approach to music was never what many would consider “scientific.” The band was independent in their approach, and would often formulate melodies and beats based solely on how they felt at the time they were playing.

Results

This purely artistic approach to music led to a wide following for their live shows, but it also led to a career with success that would be considered more “underground” in nature, as they never had a huge commercial success with their albums. None of their albums ever got any higher than #34 on the US album charts, but their following did continue to grow.

Everybody ought to recognize a number of their hits, including “Dude Looks Like a Lady,” “Dream On,” “Walk this Way,” and “Janie’s Got a Gun.” In fact, you’re probably humming “Janie’s Got a Gun” right now simply by reading the song title.

Though various members of Aerosmith have changed over the years, one member remains constant, Steven Tyler’s lips. Tyler is probably one of the most important and recognizable front men in rock history, along with Mick Jagger, John Lennon, Axl Rose, Dave Grohl, Jim Morrison, and a short list of others. In charades, one must only pout one’s lips and grip a microphone with both hands to do an accurate and speedy impression of Steven Tyler. Brightly colored bandanas would help as well. One of the most exposed lips of the past fifty years, Tyler’s have been caricatured and referenced perhaps more so than those of Angelina Jolie, Fat Albert, and Mona Lisa combined. In rock music, only Tommy Lee gets more credit for a more substantial body part, but a game of charades would take a turn for the worse if his name was involved. Aerosmith has gone through many phases as a band. AC/DC Tickets – Rocking on Dirty Deeds: A Comparative Critique

AC/DC didn’t make many people stop and ponder life’s questions when they were rocking in their heyday. And you can probably assume that with their current tour they’re sticking to their guns, playing a lot of the old stuff and running with the familiar themes. While you can point to a number of lyrical subjects in their songwriting, one that sticks out above the rest is rocking. Chasing women and getting inebriated are both very common themes, but based purely on the amount of songs with the word “rock” in the title (”There’s Gonna Be Some Rockin’,” “Rocker” “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Want to Rock and Roll),” “Rock n’ Roll Singer,” “Let There Be Rock,” “Rock n’ Roll Damnation,” “‘Rock n’ Roll Aint No Noise Pollution,” “For Those About to Rock (We Salute You),” etc.), you can imagine these guys were very serious about being rockers, rocking and basic rock n’ roll things.

Therefore, it’s not uncommon that the average AC/DC tickets buyer will try to ponder the question: What AC/DC song rocks the hardest? That kind of study would take a whole novel. For the purpose of narrowing down some of the parameters of the debate, we’ll focus on two classic songs about rocking from AC/DC’s Dity Deeds Done Dirt Cheap album, “There’s Gonna Be Some Rockin’” and “Rocker.” Let’s take a look at the lyrics.

THERE’S GONNA BE SOME ROCKIN’

”Well me and the boys are out to have some fun/ Gonna put on a show – Come on lets go/ There’s gonna be some rockin’/ There’s gonna be some rockin’/ There’s gonna be some rockin’ at the show tonight./ Every night there’s a rock ‘n’ roll Queen/ Gonna quiver and quake/ Gonna shake her thing/ There’s gonna be some rockin’/ We got a big fat sound/ Wanna share it round/ Got a big bass drum/ Gonna have some fun/ There’s gonna be some rockin’”

ROCKER

The similarities between these song lyrics are too numerous to name, but when you see them side by side you can notice some subtle differences in rock philosophy. “There’s Gonna Be Some Rockin’” describes an even that will, if AC/DC can help it, rock in the foreseeable future, whereas “Rocker” describes a person (”I” not “We”) who has already achieved the status of “rocker” (as well as “roller”). First person narration is the most obvious difference, but also the least meaningful.

If we’re here to discover what rocking is, then we need to look at the rock each song seeks to relate to the audience. That said, the major difference seems to be a matter of superficiality. “There’s Gonna Be Some Rockin’” is a vastly superior AC/DC rock song because the rocker it describes is a doer. He’s going to have some fun, include others, share it round, quiver, quake, put on a show. He gets after it and makes rock happen. In contrast, “Rocker” seems to portray a man who rocks simply because of his many possessions- a fast car, tattoos, women, tight jeans, lorex sox (what are those anyways?).

So you have to ask yourself, are you a rocker because you have the gear, or are you a rocker ’cause you take the wheel and steer? Do you necessarily rock because of the things you own, or because of the lifestyle you lead? Actions rock much louder than possessions.

It’s hard to believe that Doobie Brothers tickets have been available for more than 35 years. The true roots of the band date back to 1969, when aspiring singer and guitarist John Hartman moved to California with the hope of meeting Skip Spence of Jefferson Airplane fame. Hartman and Johnston hit it off based on their common musical interests, and the two began to jam together.

After a few months of jamming, the duo added two more members to their group, and after existing for a time with the name “Pud,” the band decided they needed a better moniker. As a result, they renamed themselves the Doobie Brothers in 1970, and a new band was born.

The band earned their stripes by playing relentlessly in clubs and pubs all over Northern California, and Doobie Brothers tickets soon became a hot item with one particular group – Hell’s Angels. Although it wasn’t necessarily a following that lent the band’s style to the masses, this following was and remains intensely loyal.
